Recently I had a discussion about the NOES franchise with a few freinds becuase the remake is coming out soon. We discussed the seuqels then we got to Wes Cravens New Nightmare and as I was talking about it i realized something. Does New Nightmare count as a sequel? I mean It doesn't actually take place on Elm Street or even Springwood and it's actually in a different universe and the killer wasn't technically Freddy. Since New Nightmare is the 7th movie made in the franchise does it actually count as a sequel or does it count as a spin off or even a new twist added into the film. Your thoughts?

I'd call it a sequel with a twist.

I've never thought of it as anything other than a sequel. Freddy is technically still around, it's just that they acknowledge the films exist. Maybe it could've been the starting point for a revamp of the series to start off a new cycle of films again (my favorite viewpoint of this one, since it is the 10th anniversary of the original) but nobody got it at the time. I still think of it as a sequel though.

I do agree that in a sense it was Freddy and the oher films were acknowledged. However I view it as a fresh idea for the franchise. Much like Halloween 3. Halloween 3 really wasn't a sequel per se but it was still apart of the series. New Nightmare is the NOES version of Halloween 3 IMO.

I don't know LF. While I see where you are coming from, I think connecting New Nightmare to Halloween III is a bit too much said.

Yeah now that i look back on it maybe comparing it to halloween 3 is a bit much. But I just feel like this isn't nessescarily another NOES intsallment and therefore more of a nod to the franchise. everytime I watch this it just doesn't come off as a NOES to me but as a different movie to me.

I've always thought of it not as a pure sequel since it doesn't have any of the story line that the previous movies do. I mean it has some of the same characters but New Nightmare takes place in a whole other realm where the characters are playing themselves and Freddy is not a child murderer or whatever you think he is, but rather an ancient demon.

Maybe not a true sequel, but the best Elm Street film after the original in my book, so it gets a pass on that. It was a good reason for Craven to get back into the series, it is fun and interesting, and it proves that Craven was already thinking about the possibility of self referential post-modern meta-horror before Scream. It is a winner.

Well said!
Perhaps there's hope yet for Scream 4 being good!
(probably not)

HNT you hit the nail right on the head. And CT. Scream 4 will be dumb...I can see it now...they covered every angle with the Ghostface killer ( literally) so it's just gonna suck. I do like Scream 1 though.

Post-modern meta horror was already in place in Italy long before either with Fulci's A Cat in the Brain, and it was done better than both at that.

Burn the heretic lol, with which part are you in disagreement? That Scream 4 will suck? (it will) or that the original Scream was good (it was) Oh, and GL, Cat in the Brain was certainly a fun display of gore, but it was NOT a particularly intelligent film, was largely an excuse to splice together scenes from other films, and was certainly not as good as either of Craven's films that we are discussing here IMHO
