1) Halloween 3 - A truly fun little film that was very inventive and way better than all of the derivative rehashes and overdone Michael Myers boredom that followed I agree this movie gets kicked around a little more than it deserves. It has several very good qualities. More than a few of the later films (6, 5, 4 come to mind) in the series. 7) Suspiria - A film that gets plenty of praise in horror circles but deserves mainstream cross-genre appreciation as a truly masterfully made film. If this film was American it would have been one of the most popular horror film ever made. Too bad we are a bunch of xenophobic assholes. When it comes to foreign films, America often is. But when it comes to people... Well, let's just say Maxim, Playboy, and FHM always have their doors open. 10) The Fly (Cronenberg) - My favorite horror re-make. And also the best remake of all-time.

Agree with your list, HNT. Martin might need a revist soon, as I've had a hard time remembering anything in it other than I didn't like it upon first visit and still need to see Schramm.

I would recommend taking another look at MArtin at some point, but just because I love it doesn't mean that everyone will. It is a little slow in its build-up, bt it has two of my favorite "vampire" attack sequences, and in its examination of psychological explanations, and recognition that in a society full of as much violence as ours, there really is no need to manufacture monsters. We have plenty of real ones.
As for Schramm, it is Jorg Buttgereit's only really good film. People are more familiar with Nekromantik, but that is really jsut a series of disjointed shocks intended to repulse. Schramm is a genuine character study, and has some of the most disturbing gore you'll ever see to boot.

I've quite often been rather intrigued by Schramm, I would like to see it some time.

Can't recommend it enough, 7. Hopefully it will be available in the US one day. It is very har to find, because Buttgereit has run into some censorship problems in Germany that have mad getting prints of the films for re-releases very difficult. Incidently, I've also heard good things about Der Todesking, but have been unable to find that one myself. I dont really believe in illegally downloading movies, but might have to make an exception if I cant come up with another way to get these

I would love to be able to see Phantasm II sometime. But I hesitate to pay thirty dollars for the VHS. Just hack your DVD player Jen. The Phantasm sphere set (probably the best DVD box set ever) is still available on play.com. I would, but I don't know how to do that. Plus the box set might be a little out of my spending range for awhile.

looking back through the thread and i gotta say that it is great to see so much love on this board for Trick or Treat. Maybe it should get its own thread!!!!I love evrything about it but especially the soundtrack one of my most listened to discs.... in fact i am using trick or treat as my avatar over at C.L.A.D currently, just wish house of mysterious secrets would hurry up and get the shirt back in anyhoo as for the topic at hand, i don't know if i can come up with 10, but in no particular order, The Exorcist 3- I just can't heap enough praise on this, one of the most intelligent and thought provoking films of any decade let alone the 90's, i just wish William Peter Blatty could get hold of the footage to release the film his way. The Last Horror Movie- I've seen this movie slagged off all over the place, and i just can't understand why.The low key atmosphere just adds to the brutality of certain scenes, and two of the biggest shocks come from just the idea of what you think is gonna happen. John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness - Over the years this has usurped the sacred Halloween as my favourite Carpenter film, once again an ideas based film that really never stood a chance in the sequel driven era it came out in, even i neglected it at first. Who could forget the scenes where my hero Alice, stabs that guy with the rusty bicycle and dines on some bugs. Shocker - One of my guiltiest pleasures, i will admit that it has some terrible performances(especially Peter Berg), but Horace Pinker has such an attitude i just love it,he even did a duet with Alice on the soundtrack. How many other movie mass murderers can say that???

I know it makes him kind of different and unique, but it also makes you as a viewer (at least me) want a revenge worthy of the way his actions would make us feel in reality if a killer were to do the things he does in this movie to us. We don't get a revenge that's worth anything. If anything, the movie goes Ghandi on us. Which is not even 1% satisfying.

Great choices, Mat. Totally agree with those films, especially Shocker and Exorcist 3. That's my favorite in the series and is one of the rare examples where I actually enjoy the smarter entry. Shocker, though, is just fun and one of my guilty pleasure favorites as well.

LOVE Trick or Treat.
Anyway, I do like The Exorcist 3, and I do think it is better than a lot of people give it credit for. Far better than the second film, for sure.

If it's hackable (which most are, including in the US) it will entail entering some numbers on the keypad.

Jen, I hold in my hand a relatively pristine copy of one "Phantasm II" on VHS. I'm going to watch it tonight to make sure it is still in operating condition (99% sure that is) - but if you PM me your address, I'll get it out either tomorrow or Monday - depending on how hung-over I am from the Super Bowl and burning down Boston when we win .

This may be a bit off topic, but is there anything that you would wish to edit about that last post 7?

Oh man, that night was traumatic. There were tears.
But yeah, I have to give it to the Giants, they played some football and fought like Hell for those rings. I think the victory is as much the Pats' fault for playing the worst game of football I've ever seen them play (what the f*ck was that offensive line doing! Three pro-bowlers?!).
But, hats off to the Giants' secondary - they won the game and for some reason Eli was gifted the MVP. . .
