Well, the sister thread to the Overrated ones, let's come up with the Underrated films now.
My list:
1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3-Maybe my seeing Part 2 will change this, but so far, I still think this is the best one in the series since part 1. Leatherface is incredibly imposing, the chainsaw is impressive, the set-up is nicely played out, and best of all, no Franklin!
2. Zombie 3-One of my favorites in the scene, with some good gore and zombie make-up, the scene in the gas station was pretty exciting, some great suspense set-ups and a landmark scene in the genre: the flying head. Still not without it's problems, but good enough overall.
3. Halloween VI: The Curse of Michael Myers-Every now and then, it's my favorite one in the series. Impressive kills, the definitive version of Michael's mask, oodles of suspense and an easy watch.
4. Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning-Like in Halloween VI, probably my favorite in the series. For once there wasn't a major problem to overcome (part 1's feminine issues or 2's long set-up) a great looking werewolf design and a great conclusion. Not the best werewolf movie by a longshot, though.
5. Frankenfish-Yes, it's one of those Sci-Fi Channel originals, but I always enjoyed this one. Great creature design, lots of bodies, a fantastic middle section to liven things up, and quite possibly one of the goriest films they ever let through. Tons of blood and carnage in this one.
6. Jaws 2-I still like 1 the most, but I have to give the sequel it's props. Takes essentially the same set-up as part 1 and makes it still watchable, the attacks come at a great pace, and another great finale, even though this one is a little easier to accept.
7. Halloween: Resurrection-I always enjoyed this one and I still do. A great set-up, a couple of great kills, some jumps here and there, and I felt the last act was very suspenseful. Again, not without it's problems, but I still enjoy it.
8. Zombie 4: After Death-Yes, miles and miles of cheese permeate this one, but it's still a fun ride. Well-made zombies, fast paced plot with lots of action, and another really easy watch.
9. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday-Yes, it's one of my favorites, but I still believe that it's very underrated. Finally has the sensibility to change and offer something new while keeping certain elements (the gore, another highlight factor, the fun, the great kills, yet another reason, and the presence of Jason) wrapped together. A very fun watch.
10. Howling IV: The Original Nightmare-One of the very first movies I ever saw, and still one I feel very strongly about. One very intelligent mystery subplot kept it moving, kept things very much based on the book, some great set-ups and action pieces, and the meltdown at the end was one of the first extreme gore scenes I ever saw that still looks great. Always have fun with this one.
