I am restarting this, cause I know I had one up before. So what are you reading, if anything? I just picked up a collection of short stories at the library the other day, Master's Choice Volume II. "Mystery stories by today's top writers and the masters that inspired them." Its a few years old I think. But anyway, Joyce Carol Oates, one of my favorite writers as some of you may remember (or not...haha) has a story in here, and the story she chose as the one that influenced her is The Black Cat, my favorite Poe story.

The Night Stalker: The Life and Crimes of Richard Ramirez
Very interesting and disturbing book about the serial killer who terrified the LA area in the 80's.

Yeah, Jen I remember discussing Oates with you on the old board. I am also a fan. And LDC, Richard Ramirez is, uhhh interesting....
I am reading Da Capo Press best music writing of 2001. A very enjoyable collection of essays, criticism, and articles from 2001. I just finished an article about the cultural insignificance and overall suckiness of Rolling Stone magazine and Cameron Crowe as a rock critic, which also praised the great Lester Bangs ( a man that anyone with an interest on music writing has to admire deeply). Now I am reading a piece about politically conscious Palestinian rap groups from the West Bank. Anyway, this book is loads of fun, but you do have to be a big music geek like me to be interested in reading the whole thing

WEll, what type of horror do you like? Are youm looking for a novel or some short stories? AE you looking for classics like Lovecraft or Poe, or more modern stuff like Peter Straub or Clive Barker. Give us an idea of your interests and I will try to come up with something you shoudl be able to enjoy

For me, modern horror, although I just finished Richard Matheson's classic vampire tale I Am Legend a short while ago
Read Jack Ketchum's Off-Season pretty good for an early 80's first debut novel.
Fan of Ed Lee: Just read City Infernal and Infernal Angel about Hell as a sprawling,Dystopic Metropolis. Also read Flesh Gothic a haunted house story with a demonic twist.
Picked up Richard Laymon's The Lake-Laymon is like Stephen King but with no conscience!

I have always meant to read more of Richard Laymon. I have heard very good things, and I read a couple of short stories by him that I really enjoyed.
Conan: I could also probably come up with a few suggestions, if I know more of what you like.

Have you ever read any Clive Barker? If you hadn't read Cabal, I would definitely recommend that one and the Books of Blood. And it is my personal opinion that EVERYONE should read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. You might enjoy Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon, if you like The Stand by King. And I loved Boy's Life also by McCammon, but I don't know if that would be your type of book or not. If you enjoy mystery as well, with just a hint of horror I would also recommend any of John Connolly's books and also The Bottoms by Joe R. Lansdale. And you can't go wrong with Lovecraft.

All of Jen's recommendations are solid, particularly Cabal. You might also consider some Dorris Lessing. Also, if you dig short stories, try some Shirley Jackson. She is quite underated and is, in my opinion, one of the finest Americdan short story writers ever. Lessing in particular can be a bit of a challenging read, but have to say that it is definitely worthwhile

Read some short stories of Lansdale and Bubba Ho-Tep-good stuff! Connolly wrote Black Angel, right? If so, decent stuff. Laymon is good for a quick, fast mayhem filled read, but, he does get a bit repetitive with certain character types, but check him out, certainly not for the squemish (sex and violence that is!)

Not squemish at all when it comes to books, so I definitely will check him out., BD.
And yes, Connolly wrote Black Angel. I have read them all, and I have liked them all. I haven't read too much by Lansdale, a few short stories and a couple of his novels, but overall, I have really enjoyed them. Very similar themes and settings though.

I have Frankenstein. (Great book!) Is Cabal the book that Nightbreed is based on?

I shoulda figured ya weren't squeamish with the violence part, being ahorror fan. D'oh! He does pour on the sex a bit, almost pornographic, but somewhow it fits into the story arc. Aha! Read Black Angel few months ago. Thought it was good. Even got a CD with the hardcover of some music he listens to. Lansdale is good. Quirky style, haven't read any full length novels of his yet.
