“Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning” is an interesting edition to the series.
**SPOILERS**
Tommy Jarvis (John Shepard) is having nightmares about Jason still being alive, even after he is sure to have killed him. He is forced into a sanitarium for the mentally ill. Arriving at the institute, the head of the facility, Dr. Matthew Leonard (Richard Young) takes an immediate shine to him, which the staff and residents don't take to him as swiftly. Things go smoothly until the handyman(Mark Venturini) slaughters one of the patients (Dominick Brascia). This sets off a chain-reaction of murders around the sanitarium. the authorities have no idea who. Tommy begins to have dreams and visions that it was Jason who killed everybody, but he doesn't tell anybody about it. The murders continue, as do Tommy's visions of Jason. The murders finally happen to the patients of the institute, and Matt and his assistant Pam(Melanie Kinnaman) become nervous about what's going on around them. When Tommy goes ballistic and nearly kills someone, everyone starts to die or go off looking for everyone else. They finally learn that it was Jason behind the killing the whole time, and begins slaughtering everybody left at the house. Pam returns in time to confront Jason and finally puts an end to his killing spree with Tommy's help.
The Good News: Even though this isn't a Jason film, the killer certainly knows his way around a tool shed. We have a flare in the mouth, three machete impaling, a slit throat, a cleaver to the head, head-clippers in the eyes, and a great decapitation. This is a great variety over the usual machete kills over Part 4, which was mainly known for the highest body count in the series, as well as the most nudity. This one also contains a lot of nudity, almost as much as the last one. The violence is also offset by the fact that it does merely introduce people only to slaughter them off only minutes later. We meet at least five or six people in the film and ten kill them off after only a few moments. This is what a Friday film is all about, random kills that have no purpose in the film, as long as they are gory, which the film certainly provides. The other good thing about this movie is that it has a bit more humor in it than one would expect. The woman who lives next door to the insane asylum is a pretty funny character, and her retard of a son is also the owner of some good lines. There is also one of the greatest realizations of "Jason." After discovering the dead bodies, Pam and Reggie walk out of the house but trip over a piece of furniture. At that moment, "Jason" comes crashing through the front door of the house wielding his machete. Part 2 had a great realization as well, but I prefer this one better. This was the best jump in the film, and it wasn't the only one. The repeated ways of killing "Jason" provide many great small little jumps. This film is never really that boring of a film.
The Bad News: Despite the hockey mask and the near invincibility, this isn't a Jason movie. Jason isn't in the movie one iota. He only serves as the inspiration for the killer in the film, which is a series fault for the film-makers. This is like "Halloween III" not featuring Michael Myers: it isn't the best idea in the world to have a series about an established character and then to have an entry that ignores what the film series is about. This is a major foul on the film, and as far as I'm concerned the only one.
The Final Verdict: If you can forgive the fact that this isn't a "Jason" film, it can be pretty enjoyable. It does have a good premise and some great kills, and is at least worthy of a rental recommendation for fans of the series.
Rated R: Nudity, Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, and a sex scene

Friday the 13th A New Beginning ***CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILER***After murdering Jason Voorhees in self defense young Tommy Jarvis suffered mental stress. Which caused him to undergo therapy. Unfortunately he has been givin every drug and treatment they can think of and it didn't do much to improve him mental stability. It's gotten so bad that he has to move into a half way house "loony bin" where those who are not right in the head go to rehabilitate. To get used to what it's like to live a normal life and get a new start in society. Well Tommy just moved into the halfway house at the age of 18. 6 years after he murdered Jason Voorhees. Right away there's never a dull moment. One of the residents of the halfway house loose there cool and chop another unfortunate resident to pieces with an axe! Soon after murders begin to occur all over town. The mayor is screaming for a suspect, and refuses the notion of Sheriff Tucker that it's Jason Voorhees. Claiming Jason was cremated, and he wants a "live" suspect. Eventually the man behind the mask and Tommy meet face to face. 2.5 Stars out of 5! A New Beginning has what some call a major flaw, which makes the film unworthy to even be a part of the Friday the 13th Franchise. However I personally love the whole idea. You see this time Jason isn't Jason... it's an impostor. A man who lost his cool and goes on a murdering spree and in hopes to secure his hidden identity, dresses up as Jason Voorhees.
I thought it was a great idea, very original. Adds a new element to the saga, breaths fresh air into the Franchise. Now for the things I don't like... Many of the kills were lame or off screen, and most of the victims are not cared for by the viewer. I felt there was too much vulgarity and raunchy filth displayed by some of the victims. A lot of it was unnecessary and you can tell they were just trying to be outrageous. On the other hand Ethel does it with an almost mastered delivery and every bit of it was great. Of course let's not forget the beautiful Debbie Sue Voorhees

I too think it's vastly underrated. The kill total is enough to forgive the aspect that it isn't Jason, the girls are enough to remind why nudity always helps out in a film, and the fact that it copies the Italian slashers more than any other film in the series should not go unheeded. One of my favorites.

I give it a 1. I didn't particularly mind the decision not to use JAson in this one, but I couldn't stand the attempt top go Toungue in cheek with this one. If you plan on trying that, you at least have to be somewhat funny

I don't really remember any tongue-in-cheek in here. The old mother was quite funny, but I don't really call that being cheesy.

Just watched it on the weekend. I thought it was pretty lame in parts and suffered badly (again!) from the MPAA but I don't think it was trying to take the piss. Yawn. 2 stars... though I think I miscued and hit three by mistake. Bugger.

Looks that way, Toad. There's no votes for 2 stars.
But I still think this is an underrated effort. Just because there's no Jason is no reason to slag it off. It's got a storyline just there for the slashing, the kills are quite impressive, the women are among the best the series ever exploited (3 is the best at that) and I was mostly satisfied with the gore. Plus, it features the return to the giallo synthetics that made the original so memorable, albeit not done as classy a manner as that one did. I still enjoy this one.

What about the lame enchilada in the porto potty scene. And what about the lame old lady. Jesus this movie sucked so bad IMHO that I don't even know where to begin criticizing it. Like I said, I have no objection to the film not having JAson (though it would have been really cool if they went all out Halloween 3 and used a new plot altogether). My objection is the the toungue in cheek elements of the scenes above. If you want to play a film for camp value, you must either get there unintentionally, or have very high brow humor disguised as scatology and slapstick. If you aim for camp and include nothing but a bunch of unfunny fart jokes your film will be a mess. HEnce what we have here

As I much prefer camp value over other tones, it's not as bad as everyone says. It just seems like the camp value is what splits people over this. I like it because of it, other hate it since they don't like campy films. Agree to disagree?

Actually this is one of the films in this series I really enjoyed. I just saw it recently, I hadn't realized it was one I hadn't seen. It IS bad, overall, but I think it definitely has its moments, and it tries something a little different. Its fun. I will give it a three. Not that it deserves that high, but hey, I liked it, despite myself.

Don't feel bad, Jen. I'll never call it anything more than a guilty pleasure, and that's about the best thing that can be said about it.
