Which do you own? Which do you prefer? And if you haven't yet begun, when do you plan on beginning to "upgrade"? BTW I realize the above picture is innacurate but it looked good dammit.

It took me a while to take the plunge but bluray coupled with a great TV (in my case a recent model 40" Sony Bravia) is quite simply a stunning affair. Of course a lot depends on the quality of the source material/transfer etc but the opening scenes of Casino Royale just blew me away on bluray. On the other hand there are drawbacks. I watched RE: Extinction on BR (blame my other half) and the cgi touch-up on Milla closeups was painfully apparent. Also some effects on older films look worse as a result of the hi-def image. Both will continue to exist hand-in-hand however and I'm pretty confident nobody is in a rush to transfer Basket Case to hidef so I'm certainly not throwing out all my DVDs just yet.

Is this even still a debate? For better or worse, Bluray won. This is now like arguing over whether you'd have rather had a VHS or Betamax in 1990. Iam not sure that Bluray was the clearly superior medium, but it is clearly the one that will survive.
Sony virtually guaranteed that by making every PS3 a bluray player.3
Sorry, I see now that you were asking about Bluray vs. DVD. That is also a decided question in the long run. BLuray is the future. Not everyone has it yet, but they will. They didn't immediately stop selling casettes and records when CDs hit the market, nor have they stripped all CD's from store shelves because downloading appears to be the wave of the future. As with any new technology, not everyone can afford to, or is even inclined to jump on board early, but at the end of the day it goes without sying that once the new technology drops in price enough everyone will eventually have it.
You can see it with plasma televisions. I remember when they cost $10,000. Now I just bought one for about $1,800 and you can get one for far less.

I'm still in the Dark Ages of DVD, and will be for some time. As GP rightfully pointed out, I doubt they're willing to upgrade such treasures as Killer Party and 976-Evil to sterling-quality Blu-Ray and frankly, I have way too many films on DVD that putting in the effort to get the Blu-Ray is more money than it's worth (and I'm still saving up to get my computer fixed, remember) or they're films that won't show up on the format for quite some time.
And the most important reason, I've never given a shit as to the quality of the presentation as much as to the quality of the film being presented. Yeah, they're comes a point where I do take that into account, but frankly, I like looking at the movie rather than judging it's technical merits, which all look the same to me anyway.

See, I disagree with the suggestion that those movies won't eventually come out on bluray. Sure, many of them won't for the same reason that many underground films never came out o DVD and were only available on videotape. In fact, I still have a couple of boxes of Beta tapes that I haven't thrown away even though it has been decades since I had a working Betamax machine to play them. On the other hand, once DVD became the medium of choice and serious collectors indicated that there was a demand for underground horror, foreign films, and other things on DVD, those things were made available to satisfy the market. They weren't there in the first or even second generation of DVD releases, however. Bluray is still young. There is not enough demand or market yet for it to make economic sense to release the films that we here love that have a very small audience. Once the audience has almost universally transferred to having bluray players, however, those things will be available on bluray.

Ron and I were just talking about this the other night. We know we will have one eventually (and have even shopped around a bit) but are in no hurry. I'm not sure that a lot of what I like to watch is going to look all that great on Blu-ray. We'll see. I think HNT's right though, Blu-ray has won, and prices are already dropping. Everyone will have one eventually. But I am not getting rid of any my DVDs, even when we upgrade, I am not going to start replacing my whole film collection until I have to. I will do what I do now, look for good deals, if it happens to be on Blu-ray, great. If not, I am fine with DVD quality. Most Blu-ray players play regular DVDs correct? Good enough for me.

Yes, bluray players will play your DVD's, and the advantage is less clear with older films unless a concerted and expensive effort has been made to digitally upgrade the films.
I haven't gottenrid of my DVD collection either, but when I buy a new film it is on bluray so long as it is available on bluray. To me, it is not unlike the experience I have with videogames. Sure, my XBox 360 will play all of my old XBox games. Sure I still have them, and sure they are still great games, but for whatever reason I just don't play them all that much. the same thing is starting to happen with my DVD collection. I still have them all. I still love the films, and have not rushed out to upgrade them all, but I still find myself gravitating to my bluray films when I pick something to watch. I've even found myself passing over a better film on DVD to watch a lesser bluray film. That is when you know the technology has taken hold.

I don't think this would ever happen to me...LOL....I still watch my VHS tapes (the few we have). It just depends on what I am in the mood to watch. And I would still be playing my nintendo if it would just work.... I guess, like GL, I am just not too concerned with what I watch being Blu ray quality.

Blu-ray may have won the format war, but dvds still outsell their blu-ray counterparts by a wide margin. I've got hundreds of dvds, and although i've 'upgraded' some to blu-ray, the majority of whats left i wont bother with. The blu-ray player will upscale standard dvds to 1080p anyway. Like GP, i have got a Sony LCD, (the 46" XBR series!) and the image is truely stunning. I still get the occasional dvd (tv shows mostly), but any new release will now be blu-ray. And for the record, i have 59 blu-rays, with 1 set still on pre-order. So 60 in total. That's not to say that blu-ray doesn't have its faults. Just look at the recently released version of "Gladiator" from Paramount. It's totally sh*t. This was released as part of their new 'Saphire Series', along with "Braveheart", and while the latters picture is breathtaking, "Gladiator" looks abysmal. Check it out HERE.

It makes sense that DVDs still outsell bluray because only about 2500 titles have been released on bluray. I don't have a player yet but will probably get one before too long...

I recently managed to talk myself out of buying Mutant Chronicles on bluray just to see how it looked and that movie is a real stinker. I'll probably still get it though. Damn me and my OCD.

I can't believe it.....but we bought a Blu-ray player....I blame my husband.... The plan was to buy an XBox 360 first ( we wanted something compatible with Netflix, so we could stream some movies to the television, the Blu-ray player we bought is). And we bought two movies......both we already owned on DVD....Halloween and Evil Dead 2 (they were surprisingly cheap....I think that's why we bought the player...seeing the prices on a few of the movies so low...lol). And so it begins......

That Evil Dead II is pretty good. I'd heard it was only a very average transfer, but it was very acceptable i thought.
The Hellraiser Blu-ray (also Anchor Bay), scrubbed up quite nicely too.
