I can't believe it.....but we bought a Blu-ray player....I blame my husband.... The plan was to buy an XBox 360 first ( we wanted something compatible with Netflix, so we could stream some movies to the television, the Blu-ray player we bought is). And we bought two movies......both we already owned on DVD....Halloween and Evil Dead 2 (they were surprisingly cheap....I think that's why we bought the player...seeing the prices on a few of the movies so low...lol). And so it begins...... Congrats and enjoy. It really makes a bigger difference than I thought it would when I bought the damn thing. Don't sleep on getting the 36o, though. That is a hell of a good time. Especially XBox Live. My internet service is currently down, and I have had no problem with staying late at work to do important things, but I am really finding it difficult not to play online Street Fighter IV tournaments, lol

I'm guess I'm just one of those people who prefers a good movie rather than a good transfer, as they all look the same to me even on DVD.

I already have an ever expanding list of blu Rays I want so that I'm ready to get started buying them when I get a player which will probably come at some point in the next several months.

I tend to agree with you in general, but for some reason I still fall in the trap of buying blurays and watching them more than my DVD's. In all honesty, a big part of it is justifying the investment. I'd have been fine if I hadn't made the plunge, but between the new television and the blura player I almost feel as if I'd be wasting money at a time when none of us have enough of it if I didn't properly invest in them

We probably wouldn't have even bothered if it wasn't Netflix compatible, their instant play section isn't just huge but our queue has quite a few instant play titles on it, so we are going to be getting a lot more value out of Netflix for sure (we would use the instant play feature a lot more if we didn't have to sit in the computer room to use it). That's how he was able to convince me. And it really does look great, I definitely notice the change, even with our regular DVDs. But again, that isn't all that important to me either. I am not about to start spending 40 or 50 dollars a piece on movies. If its a good deal though, I am all over it....LOL. I do still want the 360......though I am ridiculously attached to my Playstation 2 and I am afraid we won't play it anymore. I am not too big on change apparently.

They're not really 50 each are they? All the ones I looked up on amazon were between $15 and $25. And most used ones seem to be $10 or less.

Depends on where you are looking, we shop online very rarely, but the online prices are definitely much better. We have seen everything from ten to fifty, yeah. The average at the mall the other day seemed to be about thirty (for newer films). About twenty to twenty five for older films. And a lot of what I would personally like to own was over forty (which is insane to me). But I am used to spending five, ten dollars for several movies on DVD....LOL. Even ten dollars is a little high for one movie for me, honestly. I am a bargain hunter.

Yeah, I'd skip the mall... Not me.....our FYE's regular prices are high, but you can find killer deals there if you look. We got about 8 DVDs, all films we wanted to own or are interested in, for under thirty dollars Saturday....LOL. But no, I wouldn't really shop for Blu-ray there. But we aren't using credit cards at the moment, so that cuts down on our options for online buys. And we are literally in the middle of nowhere and nothing, so my options are REALLY limited. Which is why the above comment about high prices.

But we aren't using credit cards at the moment, so that cuts down on our options for online buys. The Visa debit card is the perfect solution. Same as cash baby

I took the plunge and just purchased a Panasonic Blu-Ray player at Best Buy. This particular model got the best reviews and I said, What the hell, my-birthday is next month and whipped out the old plastic and CHA-CHING!
I'm going to hook-it up later this evening. I bought two BR DVD's to check out: The Road Warrior( which has audio commentary by director George Miller!!!!) and Blade Runner-SE edition, which should look fab in 1080 HD!

Okay this is clearly a conspiracy between Jen and BD to force me into buying one!
And Jen I have to agree with HNT. I use a debit card which means you don't have to worry about racking up debt which is good for poor folks like me.

I didn't think the picture and/or sound would be that much different from my up-conversion DVD player, but..I..was...WRONG!
I popped in Blade Runner and the opening sequence was dazzling. The picture crystal clear. Sharp as the point of a finely honed knife!!!
Unfortunately, I could not watch rest of the film, Wife wanted to watch a movie of her choice. New in Town with Rene Zellwiger (?sp).
She owes me. Big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can get one, I'd suggest doing so. My Panasonic was a snap to hook up and so far, so good!!!

Now, see, reading through this thread has pointed out precisely why I don't really see the need for a Blu-Ray player: I'd rather the movie be entertaining rather than look good. If I can tell the difference between a building and a mountain, I'd say the picture looks good, but I'd be more inclined to watch a movie over and over if I found some entertainment value in it. Otherwise, you wind up with a film you never really watch simply because "Well, the picture's fine but it wasn't all that good," which to me is a waste of money since I know there's a lot more out there that deserve to be watched which look just as good. And since I haven't heard anyone ever come out with the hands-down definitive reference-quality Blu-Ray yet, I just don't see the point in the upgrade.

You'll be on board soon enough, GL. At this point it's only aatter of time till they stop releasing films on DVD and go bluray exclusive. I held out on switching from my VCR to DVD for all the reasons you mentioned, but eventually it was necessary.
