Hopefully he fixes past mistakes and this one turns out better. I liked the first, but it wasn't great or anything so this one probably has to be at least a bit better to be considered a true success.

I might be going to the theater to see this, despite what I said earlier. They are actually showing it here. Go figure. They are having a Spook Night with a midnight showing of the film on Saturday....I am not sure I can resist or should. I think we should support it, so they might continue to do this kind of thing (the people that recently bought the theater are apparently infinitely cooler than the guy that owned it before).

I loved his first one, and can't wait to see this one. I was really happy when I seen the first teaser poster for H2. I read that they did not want Zombie to come back and make another movie, so I was really happy.

I am not a fan of RZ's. I think that Devil's Rejects was a really sweet film, but it was almost a fluke at this point. Nothing else that he's made measures up, and I absolutely hated his remake of the original with a passion.
That said, the trailer to this one did get me a little intrigues, as there is really not a horror fan alive who doesn't react to hearing that music and seeing the mask. I suspect I'll probably see it too, but I already know I won't get much out of it

I suspect I'll probably see it too, but I already know I won't get much out of it After reading about The Blob remake, I tend to agree. I love The Devil's Rejects so much I was willing to give him a chance to move on from the Halloween films and prove himself again. But now, I don't know....I'm very disappointed. My husband's theory is The Devil's Rejects is the film he really wanted to make, the one good idea he had. He learned from his mistakes with House of a 1000 Corpses, made one really good (if derivative) film (in our opinion) and now, he just has nothing fresh to offer and doesn't know what the hell to do. And going this direction has been profitable for him obviously. I am still holding out hope that this one is better than the remake, since I am actually paying to see it...haha....but, I am really not expecting much. I figure that way I might still have fun.

Well said Jen, that is exactly how I feel now! I mean yeah, there's time left to prove himself..... But that hinges on H2 and the f'n blob being masterpieces, which as HNT states, isn't exactly likely!!!

I agree Jen. Rob was a one-idea act, and that act was fully realized in his second film (sort of how Tarantino blew his load on Pulp Fiction).
Following the Devil's Reject, his work continues to resemble something like: "The Devil's Rejects in: Halloween" or something of that sort.
That is to say, I am tiring of his white-trash take on film making.

Shockingly enough, I actually liked it. Kind of knowing what to expect helped, I think. The pacing was much better, there was some pretty interesting moments character wise. It was brutal and dirty like the remake, and no, not subtle. The focus here though was not split, this is definitely Zombie through and through, the good and the bad. Michael is pretty much a big brute, smashing through like the hulk and doing as much damage as possible, but there were also two or three moments of genuine tension (which he never achieved in the remake, I thought). Works visually pretty well. There were some things I most definitely didn't like. He used Sheri Moon Zombie and the white horse imagery too much in my opinion, not crazy about the fact that he pretty much just turned Dr. Loomis into a money grubbing ass, that didn't feel genuine at all, and there was some ridiculous dialogue (the overuse of profanity did get old quick). Overall, I was pretty pleased, but it still doesn't change my earlier opinion. I do feel in a way he is just making the same movie. At least this one was a pretty good ride, if flawed (and it might have partly been my mood, I wanted to enjoy my night out!). I don't think it will be changing anyone's mind about him, in fact, not sure anyone else will even like it....lol....

I don't know why House of 1000 Corpses gets so much negative reviews. Devils Rejects is far superior, but i always thought that 'Corpses' was exactly what Zombie intended. In an era of PG-13 horror crap, 'Corpses' was dark, gritty & bleak, with some fantastic characters and visuals. I kind of didn't mind his Halloween remake, though i do prefer the first (bootleg) cut and not the theatrical/director's cut.
Looking forward to H2, after reading your review Jen. Just hope we get a screening of it in AUS.

At CLAD they're complaining about parts where Michael imagines his dead mom...?

While I agree that House of 1000 Corpses probably was just what Zombie intended it to be, I still feel that, in any event, it was terrible.

I didn't think it was terrible, but it was so generic and kind of bland, despite the R rating. It really seemed more like one of his music videos to me, only longer. I thought there were some really good individual scenes. But overall, disappointing because I was really looking forward to it. And I HATED the ending, and the Dr. Satan parts, which gave it a cheesy feel that didn't fit with the visuals, in my opinion. Plus Sheri Moon Zombie just annoyed the hell out of me. And great review Jen, thanks for that. At CLAD they're complaining about parts where Michael imagines his dead mom...? Yes, he does, quite a lot. Its one of the things that brings the film down. Its adds a psychology to it that has him more Jason-esque than Michael Myers. But I have thought that before. How big he is, and the way he smashes through everything is also more Jason than Michael. Wonder why he just didn't do a remake of one of the Friday the 13th films..... Guess no one approached him for that one. I figure a lot of people that liked the remake, will definitely NOT like this one. And people who aren't much of a fan of his style in the first place won't find too much to like either. There is some things as far as character that are just annoying (mentioned Dr. Loomis already) and no one is going to be blown away. But I have to say, I was never bored, I think its quite a bit more entertaining than the remake, flaws and all. And plus, being a sequel....its not as "personal" to me anymore, I suppose.

Its one of the things that brings the film down. Its adds a psychology to it that has him more Jason-esque than Michael Myers. But I have thought that before. How big he is, and the way he smashes through everything is also more Jason than Michael. That pretty much sums up my feelings about it. The reason I loved the original so much was that Michael was an enigmatic force. Coming as it did at the end of the seventies when psychological profiling was emerging as real 'science' and the news and film was full of redneck weirdoes gone bad I still find it intriguing that in the setup to Halloween (original) Michael appears to come from a stable run-of-the-mill nuclear family and we have practically no explanation for his behaviour. The idea that a young child could conceivably act in such a manner seems all the more shocking in the face of such mundanity. In fact the psychiatrist Dr Loomis rejects any profiling and simply declares Michael evil! The moment RZ introduces his Michael as the hair lipped son of a couple of drunks the movie began to lose me. My mind was firmly made up as to the lack of quality by the cynical, leering and lascivious scene in which a now grown up Danielle Harris meets her end. A scene designed by and for wankers. Lame.
