This is something going on at another forum, and I figured it would play well here, so I'll bring it over and get your take on it.
Regarding the creature-feature genre, I think it's pretty common that 'Jaws' is the best shark movie, but we don't have that one immediate champion crowned for the other styles of creature features out there (we don't have a giant snake, Bigfoot/Sasquatch, killer crocodile/alligator, giant fish, etc.) so I thought it might be a good idea to have a series of contests, which I'll start on July first since I still need to go through and count them all up, where we will vote on the best film about a specific creature.
However, rather than doing voting polls since most of them will have numerous entries, it'll strictly be a write-in thread but the overall goal is still the same: most votes wins. I'm open to changing that, but I want your input first as the other forum has this as the write-ins, not a poll.
What do you all think about this?

Sounds good looking forward to it. Write in makes the most sense.

I'm a member of another forum that does movie tournaments and they are a lot of fun. I like this idea.

All right, cool. Now, there's a couple things to hammer out before we start:
1. It'll be a one-month at a time sort of thing, where each month we'll do a specific genre (Best Killer Snake, Best Sasquatch, etc) so as to not detract from our Movie of the Month.
2. It'll be a write-in affair.
3. Everything can be eligible as long as it fits into the genre-type discussing, and we can sort out eligibility when the time comes. I do recognize several films fit into several different types, but we can do something about it when the time comes.
4. I'll usually leave a list of films from the genre so that it'll be a starting point to think about the best, and of course, all the additional help with titles and such will be most appreciated.
If I left anything out, let me know. As I said yesterday, I'd like to start this in July so I can get the notes cleared up and the films separated so far, and we can start then.

If you want, send me a PM and let me know where you want to start, and I can help compile and organize a list of films.
I know at the other forum I mentioned, the person in charge of the tournaments basically pits two movies against each other at a time, one gets knocked out, one moves forward (he leaves voting open until one gets a certain amount of votes).....not sure we have enough people to do that though.

I keep a notebook of the films I would like to see and then fill it in with all the marks I require once I've seen it, and the genre listing is part of that, so I have a very large selection of stuff to work with as well. I do appreciate the effort with this, but I don't feel the PM is the way to go here. Since I announced it so far ahead of time, we can use the board's help and get it running nicely before we start so as to avoid any problems. That brings up the second part of your post, about one-on-one battling. I'd rather we do it in the spirit of our monthly polls: I'd put a genre down, we discuss and debate the best one and the one with the most votes is considered the winner. I was thinking more of going that route, seeing as how the original point of this was to find the 'Jaws' of each of these different genres. That was how I originally planned it, but if you have any suggestions, feel free. That's why I'm doing it this early.

Sounds good, but one question. What if there is no clear winner? For example, if you were to ask what the best killer fish movie was, we could conceivably (although it is unlikely) all choose different films. At least with a limited number of choices we help to ensure a clear winner.

The tastes here are sometimes pretty varied, which is awesome for discussion, but agreeing on the very best film from a comprehensive list might be kind of tough.

lol, well in an effort to combine discussions on two threads, Avatar is not the best Cameron film by a long shot. But can we all agree that Pihrana 2 clearly is his best?

Well, I got a head-start on this and so far have the following list:
Alien Creature Feature Alligator/Crocodile Creature Feature Lizard Creature Feature Killer Bird Creature Feature Killer Bug Creature Feature Killer Cat Creature Feature Killer Dog Creature Feature Killer Fish Creature Feature Killer Insect Creature Feature Mummy Creature Feature Parasitic Creature Feature Prehistoric-Creatures Creature Feature Rodent Creature Feature Sasquatch/Bigfoot Creature Feature Sea-Creature Creature Feature Snake Creature Feature Spider Creature Feature
Okay, that's about as good as I can start off, if I left out anything or have a question of eligibility, mention and discuss.

How is a killer bug feature different from a killer insect feature?

Oh, I thought I had that one changed, it should actually be Earth-Based Creatures. Basically, it's insects that can't fly, such as scorpions, ants, centipedes, slugs, worms, etc. Killer Insect Creature Feature would be wasps, bees, locusts, mosquitos, and the like. I thought that was changed before I posted it, so I'll make the change below, and so then the list should actually be this:
Alien Creature Feature Alligator/Crocodile Creature Feature Lizard Creature Feature Killer Bird Creature Feature Killer Cat Creature Feature Killer Dog Creature Feature Killer Earth-Based Creature Feature Killer Fish Creature Feature Killer Insect Creature Feature Mummy Creature Feature Parasitic Creature Feature Prehistoric-Creatures Creature Feature Rodent Creature Feature Sasquatch/Bigfoot Creature Feature Sea-Creature Creature Feature Snake Creature Feature Spider Creature Feature
Again, if I left anything out, let me know.

Seems a bit too particularized to me. Personally, for example, I think that flying and non-flying insects can be evaluated together. I also think that Alligators and Crocodiles should not be seperated from Lizards generally, as they are lizards. I don't think mummies are creatures at all. I think that they are traditional movie monsters, and if you include them than you might as well ask for the best vampire or werewolf film on this list, which you clearly have not done. Anyway, that is my two cents. Still like the idea, and whether you agree with me or not I look forward to playing
