I'll probably rent this movie rather than buy it.

finally got round to watching and was pleasantly suprised! not bad, not bad at all. Definately a marked improvement over the remake- hell i might even buy it if i find it at a decent enough price. Much more graphic than i expected, especially the murder in the slaughterhouse with the sledgehammer

Gave this a watch recently, and gotta say, thoroughly disappointed with it. Beyond the fantastic gore, which is always a welcome into any film, this didn't have a whole lot else in it. The ending chase through the slaughterhouse is fun, the amount of torture committed against them makes the family that much crazier and again, the gore works nicely with plenty of blood and flesh flying.
As for the bad parts, outside of the kills, nothing happened. They come across them, keep them chained up and then kill them one at a time. Pretty dull and boring. Leatherface/Thomas Hewitt isn't even remotely scary at all, he's not on-screen often enough to really feel anything for him beyond physical fear that he gets from his towering size over everyone. Even the lame-ass mention of why he's doing this, a beaten down dog that one day finally snaps, is such a non-threatening motive, and yet it's not mentioned in here. He just goes crazy when the slaughterhouse is closed. Not frightening and takes a lot away from him. And I'm still pissed the blonde with the big juggs never took her top off. That really pissed me off. At least Biel gave us nipples through her water-soaked shirt in the first one.
I still prefer the remake over this one, which is one of my favorites still of that genre (maybe top three, there's still one or two more 'decent' ones to get through) which was fun, had some great jump moments and a ton of suspense in it. This was just gory, and while that can be great, I always preferred more to it than that.

I think it is a lousy movie by any objective measue. YOou are right, GL, that the plot was sorely lacking. THat said, this is exactly the type of crappy movie that is a guilty pleasure of mine and keeps me coming back to post here. I love freaky maniacs slaughtering annoying teenagers. It gory and nasty and brutal. More brutal than most similarly themed movies. Fun to watch snot nosed brats butchered for my entertainment. That said, the film appeared to be shooting for an allegory around the draft and the horrors of Vietnam (and Iraq by extension) juxtaposed against the crazed rednecks. Sort of middle America rising up to slaughter its young. This is a very intriguing angle and I wish that a bit more was doe with it

Interesting way to look at it, but then why would the message resonate at all if all the films with a similar story told that? There's a large selection of films where you could say the same thing (Hammer's Dracula series, 2000 Maniacs, LHotL, HHE, etc.) that for this to actually stand out from the pack merely because of the gore isn't that big of a job, and makes the film feel a lot less than what it should be.

Yeah, I would say that I agree the film was not that great. I would also say, though, that as a horror fan I have fun with a lot of films that, if pressed to answer honestly, I would have to admit were not good movies in an objectie artistic sense. The entire Friday the 13th series comes o mind. We all like them, but are they really any good? Of course not.

I know when a film looks cheap. That's about as far as my eye goes, as I can't tell the difference. It looked expensive, I'll give it that.

Big disappointment. Just looks like they re-cut the remake and added a few more new scenes.

Totally agree. Felt way too much like the first remake, just taking sliughtly different paths to get to the same results.

It never had the pretensions of being much else though I think, and it was a fun ride there in a brain dead sort of way.
But you are right about the blonde - felt very ripped off there...

I've seen a lot worse, but after heaping so much praise at it, I still don't get the big deal with it, especially at the incredibly similar plot.

The entire Friday the 13th series comes o mind. We all like them, but are they really any good? Of course not. This brings to mind an interesting point. Whenever i am introduced to someone and it comes up that i am a horror fan (usually within the first 1/2 hour, i wear my love of horror on my sleeve, literally), the inevitable question is asked "whats your favourite horror movie?" I dont know, my fave flick can change from month to month and i usually dont have just one. but then they follow up with "whats the scariest horror movie you've ever seen?" Easy Answer - Suspiria - without doubt the scariest viewing experience i have ever had,but that doesnt necessarily mean that it is my favourite, favourite to me suggests enjoyment.Do i love Suspiria.....HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!! but do i enjoy it- hardly! its not designed for that. Just as a film such as tcm the beginning is designed as entertainment a guilty pleasure and should not be approached as anything else.
