I know the only thing I'm going to come away from this will be disappointment. It'll be an incredibly tame R, if it even gets that rating, the scares will be quite low, and it'll be so neutered to bring in the young crowd we'll barely have anything here to enjoy from it. If it ends up being decent, I'll consider it a rousing success.

I don't know, GL. That has not really been the pattern with remakes. I agree that I will be dissappointed and don't really care to see it, but the TCM, Halloween and F13 remakes were very much hard R and far more graphic than the originals ever were.
I certainly don't think this film needs a remake. I know it will not be as good as the original. If the pattern is anything to go by, though, the gore levels will be increased to disguise diminished suspense and less interesting characters

Good point about the gore HNT. I watched the nightmare remake trailer and his voice doesn't sound like Freddy!

It'll be closer for me than most of you guys, as I don't think the original is all that great and it's certainly far more overrated than it is a classic, but in terms of genre legacy (which is where most of it's classic status is given to it in the first place) this one won't hold a candle to it. In terms of entertainment, I see it coming closer to surpassing the original in my own ends but it still won't be all that much more-so.

Have to disagree with you there buddy and say that I think the original is far more classic than overrated. Freddy creeped me out as a kid the way few horror killers can. One of the only movie characters I had nightmares about as a kid.

Agreed, CT. the things you said about it being overrated due to influence are far more legitimately said about a series like F13 IMHO than this one, GL. Craven made a really terrifying film that could have stood on its own with no sequels and it would still be an all time classic. If anything, the sequels diminished its reputation because people now compare the original to any other slasher series when the truth is it was far more clever and inventive

I never got into any of the sequels much but I always loved revisiting the original. It truly is a great stand alone horror film as you say HNT.

To me, I've always gotten into the Friday series a lot easier than this one. I just never got into the original. It was way too complicated with way too many rules about what could be done and when Freddy could attack, and I never really understood what was so creepy about Freddy. He just seemed like every other villain in horror films, as, when you get right down to it, Freddy's just any old serial killer who comes back from the dead to exact revenge. There's been a whole slew of slashers like that, this one was no different.

Friday is the better series IMO because it actually improved as it progressed through the first 4. Nightmare declined in the sequels. However looking at them as individual movies, I feel the original nightmare is better than any single Friday film. Freddy doesn't seem too original these days, but back in '84, I'm guessing he probably was. Not sure though as I was a sperm cell at the time!

What sets Freddy apart is not only his personality (its chilling how much he ENJOYS torturing and killing kids) but the fact that he stalked you when you were so completely vulnerable. Like they say, you HAVE to sleep sometime. I've always had sleep issues and very vivid nightmares, so its a particularly frightening idea to me. There's really no protection from that.....lol.

Great point Jen.
Wanna avoid Jason? Stay away from Crystal Lake!
Wanna avoid Freddy? You better start drinking coffee and see how long you can last!

Exactly right, Jen. Not to mention, the one thing that horror films do to young kids is give them nightmares. I still remember seeing this one in the theater at an absurdly young age (don't think my parents really knew what we were getting into) and having my usual horror movie nightmares afterword. This was different, though, because I would wake up and realize that having the nightmare is exactly what would allow Freddy to "get me." It scared the hell out of me. I'm sure that if I was tounger and saw all of the campy remakes first it would never have the same effect. Since I was so young and saw the original first, though, it completely horrified me. And my brother, lol. He was already afraid to take a bath because he thought he would go down the drain (he must have been 4 or 5). THe idea of Freddy coming up and grabbing him was just more than he could deal with

Freddy doesn't seem too original these days, but back in '84, I'm guessing he probably was. Not sure though as I was a sperm cell at the time! I saw ANOEM in the theater. I was a teenager and yes, Freddy K was brand spankin' new and there was nothing like him before. I can still hear everyone screaming when he came down that alley, arms elongated, clawed metal fingers scraping along the alley wall. A remake, indeed, to echo those before me, would most likely ramp up the gore, the teens would be snarky, world weary pop culture spouting automons, thus pretty much every remake since!
